Root River State Trail

The Root River State Trail is one of the premier paved cycling trails in the Midwest, running 42 miles through the limestone bluff country of southeast Minnesota. The trail follows the Root River through five communities — Fountain, Lanesboro, Whalan, Peterson, and Rushford — passing through some of the most scenic river valley terrain in the region. Lanesboro sits near the center of the trail and serves as the natural hub for most cyclists riding the route.

The Trail

The surface is paved asphalt throughout, wide enough for side-by-side riding, and largely flat along the river corridor with gentle grades near the bluffs. The full out-and-back from Fountain to Rushford covers 84 miles, but most visitors ride a portion — the Lanesboro to Whalan segment is a popular shorter ride at about 8 miles each way, passing through the small community of Whalan, home to the Aroma Pie Shop, a well-known trail stop. The Fountain to Lanesboro section climbs more noticeably and rewards riders with long valley views.

The trail is open to cyclists, walkers, and inline skaters. It is not open to motorized vehicles. Dogs are welcome on leash.

Season and Conditions

The trail is typically open from late April through October, weather permitting. Peak season is May through September. Fall riding in September and October draws visitors for the hardwood color along the bluffs, which tend to peak in early to mid-October in this part of Minnesota.
