A Historic Boutique Hotel in Lanesboro, Minnesota

The Phoenix HotelOriginally completed in 1885, the building that now houses Stone Mill Hotel & Suites has played an important role in the history of Lanesboro for more than a century.

Built by local entrepreneurs Peter A. and Samuel A. Nelson, the structure originally operated as the “Nelson Brothers’ Cold Storage” facility. The building processed and stored eggs and poultry that were shipped throughout the Midwest by rail, helping support the region’s growing agricultural economy during the late 19th century.

Samuel NelsonOne of the most remarkable features of the building is its limestone construction. Much of the stone was reclaimed from the historic Phoenix Hotel, a prominent Lanesboro landmark that was destroyed by fire in 1885. Additional limestone was quarried from nearby bluffs overlooking the Root River, giving the building its iconic appearance that still defines the property today.

Throughout the hotel, guests can still discover pieces of this history, including original mill artifacts, preserved architectural features, and design elements inspired by the building’s industrial past.
